THE DAY HE ARRIVES

DIRECTOR: Hong Sang-Soo - SOUTH KOREA

Sungjoon, a film professor, arrives to visit an old filmmaker friend in wintry Seoul and encounters various acquaintances and strangers. Over the next several days, the same rendezvous occur with different results—is he living a repetitive life or re-living the same day again and again? Like the intoxicated reveries of his aimless characters, Hong’s storytelling transforms casual, everyday occurrences into a mysterious meditation on human behavior. Mixing romantic allure and cool detachment, Hong’s ability to capture ordinary characters doing ordinary things—wandering, drinking, conversing—within a fascinating narrative structure of repetitions and parallels, makes for a signature narrative style. “A clever and dream-like game with narrative time embedded in trivial but amusing social and sexual encounters.”—Sight and Sound (79 mins.)

Selected Filmography: Virgin Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors (00), Woman is the Future of Man (04), Woman on the Beach (06), Like You Know It All (08).

Sponsored by the Oregon Korea Foundation.
