DIRECTOR: Michael Glawogger - AUSTRIA

Glawogger was awarded the Special Jury Prize at the Venice Film Festival for the third part of his observational trilogy—preceded by Megacities and Workingman’s Death—on globalization and its impact on lives around the world. Focusing on the uncertain lives of prostitutes in Thailand, Bangladesh, and Mexico, the jury praised its “stunning visual eloquence and precision,” which produces imagery whose beauty and emotional engagement almost match that of fiction cinema. We see women speaking freely about all aspects of their work, including aging and the role of religion as a form of support, as well as customers who have their say about why they visit prostitutes. Avoiding clichés and easy judgments, Glawogger reminds us about the price of commerce: for all the money these women may have received, their lives are not rich in anything but stories. (119 mins.)

Selected Filmography: Megacities (98), France, Here We Come! (99), Slugs (03), Workingman’s Death (05), Slumming (06), Kill Daddy Good Night (09), Contact High (09).

Sponsored by the Austrian Consulate General in Los Angeles.

Interests: Documentary.
