Fresh Film NW

Fresh Film Northwest, a component of the Northwest Filmmakers’ Festival, is a juried survey of work by up-and-coming teen filmmakers living in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, and Alaska. Congratulations to the 30+ teens whose works will screen in a free public Winners Program in the Whitsell Auditorium on November 16 (see right) and to the additional 15 filmmakers whose works have been selected for Honorable Mention (see page 17). Congratulations as well to the high schools, community organizations, individual educators, teaching artists, and other mentors who supported their efforts. May this glimpse into the heart and spirit of the next generation be a refreshing reminder that filmmaking is first and foremost about people encouraging each other and showing the way.

Ellen S. Thomas, Education Director

JURORS’ STATEMENT

In viewing this year’s entries, we found ourselves responding most positively to those films whose confidence, innovation, and/or experimentation seemed to scream out, “Look at me!” and “This is now, this is happening!” We were excited when we could see that new eyes were on a topic or a genre, and our assumptions about an established territory were being challenged. Our favorites had a “let’s do it!” feeling behind them, as if some moment of inspiration had clicked in and really taken off. We were especially moved when the joy of the teen filmmakers was present in their work. All of these things combined to define “fresh” for us as jurors. We hope that our selections will be equally appealing to you, the audience.
